wow

a beautiful night. so many people stopping by the funeral home to lend their support to our family. my cousins, yes, but those who had worked with my uncle and those who knew him only thru us.

Lisa and her family and Cindy and her husband came to pay their respects. dad asked them to stay for the rosary and they did.

the whole time together was soul-filling yet sad.

at work

on a Monday...can't focus, can't think, can barely breathe.

in this morning's meeting, the one running the meeting said we should have two bags we carry during the day. 1 for the personal stuff and 1 for the work stuff. when we get to the door at work we should drop the personal bag and pick up the work bag. when we leave work for the day we should let go of the work bag and then pick up the personal bag.

really really fucking hard to do today. lotsa stuff swirling. seemingly no compassion from those higher up. i really just wanna curl up into a ball and sleep these feelings away...wake up with the sun-shining thru the windows and all this grief worked thru.

here's to the contrast!

take two

Friday was a rough day. when the alarm went off, i climbed into the shower and had every intention of working the entire day. i quickly realized my emotions had other ideas. i attempted to put on eyeliner. it wouldn't stay on. i couldn't stop crying and the simple tears turned into sobs. i was a mess when i called Lori to tell her. i am certain she was shocked at the strength of the emotions that were flowing from me. i just couldn't stop them. when Grandma died, i had no choice but to work. the morning show had quit the day before. i had to do the morning show the day of the funeral and then go back to work the following day. i put away the feelings til i had time to work thru the grief. of course, that time never came. the grief came out at the most inconvenient times. this time, i wasn't going to put it away for later. i made that choice.

Dad and Uncle Don came together early in the day to put together "the arrangements." they had to go to the city's police department to pick up Uncle Rich's personal effects...his wallet, checkbook, keys. after his newspapers had built up from Tuesday, his neighbors went looking for him. the front door was unlocked (it was always unlocked when he was home...even at night...the security of small-town life) and they found him in bed. they didn't know what to do, so they called the city police. they came in and got him, took him to the hospital where he was pronounced. the police had really wonderful things to say about Uncle Rich. they were all familiar with him...not something you would normally think would be a GOOD thing...he was part of the community. he walked every day the weather was good...and walked for miles. they would honk and wave if they saw him first, he would wave first if the reverse was true. when he first moved to the community, he would have the occasional seizure while walking, the police would find him and take him to the hospital. eventually, all the officers learned his seizure patterns and would just take him home and stay with him til they knew he was alert and back in the world. i think he helped each one of them become better officers, and maybe even better people.

the phone rang the entire day, Dad repeatedly telling the story and i think becoming numb to it to be able to get thru the day. he and Uncle Don went to the house Friday to make sure everything was fine. the police had removed the sheets and the mattress, as Uncle Rich's body had let go of its fluids, and had opened the windows to get the air circulating. i can't imagine that courtesy happening in a big city, you know? Dad brought home the valueables, he and Uncle Don talked about what needed to be done, hugs given, tears and stories pouring out from all of us.

the only thing i knew i could do was cook. to help fill our stomachs while feeling an emptiness somewhere that wasn't going to be filled. i made breakfast Friday...scrambled eggs and toast...and dinner later. Potato-encrusted chicken breasts with mushroom risotto (thank you Boris!) and steamed asparagus. Friday night, one of Dad's buddies brought over Italian sausage and peppers for us, and our neighbors brought chicken cachiatore for us to eat later. the bringing of food during a crisis is a societal tradition i hadn't seen before. when you really think about it, those traditions show the respect and the caring others have for you and your family...

yesterday we went to the house and started going thru his things. mom and i took the bedroom and went thru his clothes and the dressers. there are bags upon bags of clothes to go to St. Vincent de Paul Society. they are sitting on the bed frame. the family will come thru the house and see if there is anything they want. what remains will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul so someone else will be able to use it. there are bedroom sets, a couch he never used, lamps and many plastic dishes and glasses. because he was alive, many families will live better lives. that seems to be the thought i return to.

Aunt Kathryn will be here today along with two of her daughters. Rose is coming in from Colorado, Debbie from Tennesee. Mary Ann may be here for the funeral Tuesday. almost all of Uncle Don's kids will be here. Carol had an idea that a few of us who are willing should eulogize him. she suggested i do it along with herself and the oldest of her sisters. a great idea. Debbie is the oldest of her family and she remembers Uncle Rich before his epilepsy. i am the niece who has spent the most time with him in recent years. i have a few stories of him that will make us laugh and appreciate his life.

because he was alive, because he was who he was, every single person who met him, knew him, loved him is a better person for knowing Uncle Rich.

uncle rich

is my dad's kid brother.

he died today. unexpectedly and without any of us near him. he died at home, in bed, and (i hope) in his sleep. the last child to join the family and the first one to leave it.

i don't know what to do with myself. i know his spirit is with God and he is rejoicing to be there...free of his body whose electrical system didn't work quite right.

it does now. :)

i love you Uncle Rich

another open house tomorrow

the house has been on the market for the summer...again. this is the third summer it's been for sale.

tomorrow, from 2-4pm, prospective buyers will once again take a gander at what 229 thousand will get ya in our town.

i'll have the house spic and span, smelling of chocolate chip cookies, after the smudge tonight and an hour of Master Lin's heart chakra sutra chant before anyone gets here to transform the energy in the house to one of welcome.

let's get this house sold!!

loss number one

is in the books.

23 - 7 . the Spartans deserved it, as they were spot on. i was disappointed we didn't start throwing the ball til close to the second quarter, especially when that is what has been working for us so far.

the guys on abc/espn are at least giving us props for being better this year...thank goodness. how could we be worse than the 3 -9 season last year?

Boris' Cornhuskers are off this week. they play Virginia Tech next week and then Missouri, who are playing out-of-their-minds this season, the following week.

dinner tonight

the picture sucks so don't know how yummy this looks but Chicken Marsala and smashed potatoes for dinner tonight surely tastes good!

man i LOVE the weekends when i have the house to myself...

good news

Cubs clinch the division title! we're goin to da playoffs with Jeff Samardzjia on the roster!!

better

ND gets a touchdown but more points for the Spartans too. 3 turnovers and 2 missed field goals. the score could be closer.

that Ringer kid on Michigan State is a maniac...he's like the Energizer Bunny. even as a Notre Dame fan, he is fun to watch. this week's pre-game interviews, he wasn't trash talking our team, he was giving us respect when the rest of the college football world seems to be piling on, even with two wins under our belt.

16-7 4th quarter with MSU in the red zone...

ugh

it doesn't look good.
4th quarter, down 13-0. Jimmy got sacked for the first time this season and the guys have turned over the ball a few times.

poo.

uh oh

Michigan State has scored first, albeit a field goal.

Spartans up 3 - 0.

let's go Irish!

the alchemist

Lisa and i stumbled upon Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho's first book "The Alchemist" about a year ago. he basically writes parables...fables for adults. each book has a central theme, most of them involving a bit of spirituality. the theme of "The Alchemist" is to follow your dreams. as i read the book i took notes and thought i'd share them here:

  • people are afraid to pursue their most important dreams, because they feel that they don’t deserve them. or that they’ll be unable to achieve them. their hearts become fearful just thinking of loved ones who go away forever, or of moments that could have been good be weren’t, or of treasures that might have been found but were forever hidden in the sands. because, when these things happen, we suffer terribly.

  • the fear of suffering is worse than the suffering itself. no heart has ever suffered when it goes in search of its dreams, because every second of the search is a second’s encounter with God and with eternity.

  • when i have been truly searching for my treasure, every day has been luminous, because i’ve known that every hour was a part of the dream that i would find it. when i have been truly searching for my treasure, i’ve discovered things along the way that i never would have seen had i not had the courage to try things that seemed impossible for a shepherd to achieve.

  • all people who are happy have God within them. happiness could be found in a grain of sand from the desert. a grain of sand is a moment of creation, and the universe has taken millions of years to create it. people’s hearts seldom say much about those treasures because people no longer want to go in search of them. we speak of them only to children. later, we simply let life proceed, in its own direction, toward its own fate. very few follow the path laid out for them….the path to their Personal Legends, and to happiness. most people see the world as a threatening place, and because they do, the world turns out to be a threatening place.

  • what you still need to know is this:
before a dream is realized, the Soul of the World tests everything that was learned along the way. it does this not because it is evil but so that we can, in addition to realizing our dreams, master the lessons we’ve learned as we’ve moved toward that dream. that’s the point at which most people give up. it’s the point at which, as we say in the desert, one “dies of thirst just when the palm trees appeared on the horizon.” every search begins with beginner’s luck. and every search ends with the victor’s being severely tested.

  • when you possess great treasures within you, and try to tell others of them, seldom are you believed.

  • and my favorite bit of the book: don’t give in to your fears. if you do, you won’t be able to listen to your heart.

i fly thru his books. easy to read and impactful. when i needed to delve into forgiveness, i read his "By The River Piedra I Sat Down and Wept," and have read a few more of his fables. i suggest beginning with "The Alchemist" or find him in the fiction section and let your intuition guide you!

pancakes

i had pancakes for dinner...a stack of 3 gluten-free pancakes with real maple syrup. and tucked inside? two gorgeous fried eggs to make the pancakes creamier.

oh...and a big glass of milk.

yum.

by the way, i have the house to myself til WEDNESDAY!!!

fringe part 2

more Fringe last night.

again, really freaky stuff. pituitary glands, a baby being born a few hours after conception (talk about rapid growth!), cameras that take a picture of the last image your eyes have seen...wow.

i love the X Files feel of the show...the feeling of outside forces moving chess pieces into place...and the revelation of those pieces and those moves.

theory number one:

-the doc isn't completely insane. he has somehow been directing this all from the inside.

theory number two:

-"the pattern" is happening so they will get the doc outta the loony bin and start him working on his projects again.

the doc is an integral part of the plot, and not just because he was a mad scientist and can fix and/or figure out ANYTHING put in front of him.

new interesting twist? the phrase "Peter's medical history" sent shivers...

episode number three next Tuesday at 9pm. I CAN'T WAIT!!

Tuesday, September 16, 2008

i LOVE jj abrams!

i just finished watching the first episode of "Fringe".

wow oh wow oh wow!!!!

i haven't been this into a new show on Fox since the X Files. creepy and oogy and action-packed. i never saw any of twists coming, and that excites me to noooo end. the female lead is a mix of Mulder and Scully with an element of Kate from Lost's kick-ass-edness. Joshua Jackson
is waaay cool as the rebel/genius. i like him. i like him ALOT!

the insane scientist, Blair Brown as the Massive Dynamics exec with the ROBOTIC ARM (what?!!), the creepy dude from Lost...

i loved the ending...
"question him"

again i say WHAT?!

love it love it love it

Tuesday nights at 9 on Fox. watch it! you will NOT be disappointed.

excerpts from Early To Rise dot com

How to Become an Early Riser
By Michael Masterson

You've seen the studies: Early risers are happier, healthier, and more productive at work. They stay in better shape, earn more money, and report that they are more satisfied with their lives. And even if you haven't seen the studies, you've read about them in ETR. "Get up early and seize the day!" we keep telling you.

Lots of research has been devoted to sleeping patterns in the past few years, and it's clear that for some people (about 15 percent, I've read), "late to bed and late to rise" really is more natural. But just because it's a little harder for you to be an early riser doesn't mean you shouldn't try. The benefits are just too great and too numerous to ignore:

You will get more work done.
You will accomplish more important tasks.
You will advance your career more quickly.
You will be more respected at work.
You will make more money.
You will have more time to exercise.
You will be healthier.
You will be happier.

If you'd like to become an early riser but are having a difficult time convincing your body to cooperate, follow this 12-step program:

Early Riser Step 1: Stop blaming yourself.
It may not be a lack of willpower that is making you want to sleep till noon. It is more likely a combination of your genes, blood sugars, hormones... and bad habits. But aside from your genes, these are all things you have some control over.

Early Riser Step 2: Take melatonin, not chemicals, at night.
To get up early, you have to get to sleep early. If you have trouble falling asleep, try taking a melatonin supplement instead of a sleeping pill. Dr. Sears calls this hormone - which is produced by the body in response to darkness - "nature's sleep regulator."

Early Riser Step 3: Sleep in the dark.
The less light, the more melatonin your body naturally produces. So block out as much light as possible in your bedroom. Use blackout curtains or shades, and open them as soon as the alarm goes off.

Early Riser Step 4: Get plenty of fresh air.
Fresh air is good for sleeping and for wakefulness. If you sleep with the windows closed, get outside and breathe in some fresh air first thing in the morning.

Early Riser Step 5: Don't eat before you sleep.
Your last meal or snack should be about three hours before you go to sleep. You'll sleep sounder and feel much better in the morning.

Early Riser Step 6: Don't use the snooze button.
According to the Sleep Disorders Center at Children's Hospital in Philadelphia, you will have a much easier time getting up when the alarm first rings, rather than waking up, falling asleep again, and then waking up a second time.

Early Riser Step 7: Put flowers in your bedroom.
Researchers at Harvard reported that "non-morning people" said they were happier and more energetic if they woke in a room with fresh flowers.

Early Riser Step 8: Brighten up your walls.
Some studies have indicated that vibrant colors help activate the energy cells, so paint your bedroom a bright, cheery color to wake up to.

Early Riser Step 9: Stretch.
Five to 15 minutes of stretching in the sunlight will do wonders to get rid of any stiffness that may have settled in overnight. Yoga stretches are especially good.

Early Riser Step 10: Exercise.
Supplement the stretching with exercise. After stretching, I alternate between calisthenics (Hindu push-ups, sit-ups, etc.) and a PACE routine - usually sprinting or stair climbing.

Early Riser Step 11: Start the day with a smile.
Before you even wash your face, do a set of 25 smile repetitions. Just stand in front of the mirror and smile as brightly as you can... 25 times. The physical act of smiling produces endorphins that will give you energy and drive.

Early Riser Step 12: Wake up just one minute earlier every day.
It wasn't until I hit my thirties that I came to understand the value of waking up early. I was bringing home the bacon, as they say, having mastered the art of making money. But rising at 8:30 every morning left me no time to accomplish other goals. So I started setting my alarm for one minute earlier every day. Soon I was up at 8 a.m.... then 7:30... then 6:30... and, eventually, at one point in my career, 5:30. (These days, I wake up a little later - usually 6:00 or 6:30.)

Become an early riser yourself, and there's no telling what you can accomplish.

my two cents: huh. something to think about, 'specially since i am currently waking anywhere between 4:30 and 5:30...without an alarm...sooo wrong on soooo many levels...

the guy behind the counter...Rodd...says a Democratic oil change is an oil change that's "a dollar less than the Republicans"

that's funny stuff.

by the way...the sign is pulling in 2-3 people per day to at least ask the same question as i.

Sunday September 14 at 1:46am

my text signal rings out:

"Of course the one football game i get to watch and its michigan notre dame" :)

Boris. from the other side of the world. i giggled that he was forced to watch college football at 7am on a time-delayed basis and that it was MY favorite team, not his beloved cornhuskers. of course it was the Irish. the whole WORLD wants to know about the Irish, right?

we texted for about 45 minutes and then he was gone. i, on the other hand, was awake til almost four, thinking about him and missing him and appreciating the fact that i know him.

i am happy and sad all rolled into one
...

it took me a second

to realize this wasn't Sarah Palin:

skydiving update

no "jumping out of a plane" silliness for me this weekend.

just thought you'd want to know :)

rain rain

7.26 inches of rain in two days. 6.34 inches of it yesterday. not much of a surprise to those who were watching the ND/Michigan game across the nation thanks to NBC.

and more rain, courtesy of Hurricane Ike, is on its way this afternoon.

granted, our homes haven't been ripped apart by hurricane force winds, but the flooding here is widespread. the water level of the creek across the street is higher than i have seen it in a long while.

and yet, we are warm and dry, safe and secure, well-fed, too.
i am filled with appreciation.

Lou's wisdom

Legendary ND coach Lou Holtz spoke yesterday before the game at the unveiling of his statue in front of the Stadium.

Lou is quite a motivating speaker. "You're going to have setbacks, you're going to have disappointments," Lou said to the crowd. "But you've got two choices when you're down: stay down or pick yourself up. This is a wonderful opportunity. I hope they'll look and say, 'You know, if that dumb sucker can do it, so can I.'"

another of the things he talked about was the '88 national championship team's credo:

1-do the right thing
2-do the best you can
3-do you care?

three things to pay attention to every day and in everything you do.

Thanks Lou!

GO IRISH!!

oh my!

torrential rain hasn't stopped the boys from coming out and looking very very impressive against Michigan.

at the end of the first quarter ND was ahead 21-0. wow. last year's final score was embarrassing...35 to nothing Wolverines. the team said they weren't going to be embarrassed by Michigan like that again. last year Clausen was sacked 8 times in this game. today (and last week, too)? none. no sacks allowed. the offensive line has stepped up so far and that's fun to see.

kinda cool stats: today is game #401 in Notre Dame Stadium, and today's win makes it win number 300 in the hallowed halls.

we ARE N.D.!

Ike

it's the infrared satellite image of Ike as he batters and beats the living crap outta Texas.

this one looks like it's gonna be seriously destructive. 20 foot storm surges into Houston. i have felt oogy all day long. i attribute it to Ike and his energy. destruction and fear and sadness and loss. turn that energy around. gratitude for life would be a good place to start, wouldn't it?

the adventure this weekend...

just COULD be jumping out of a plane.

last night at a remote at Hooters, Lynnaie...the other salesperson at the station...met the Airborne Unit who are parachuting into Notre Dame Stadium tomorrow before the Irish take on the Wolverines. she is dragging me along with her tonight to meet these guys. in another moment of insanity, i confessed to her that i have always wanted to challenge myself and skydive. she squealed that if she could get these guys to do it with us...PARACHUTE, that is...that we should.

so...there is a possibility of silliness this weekend.

WTF am i thinking?? :)

Perkins..

an international meeting place?

there i was, in Perkins Restaurant, just up the street from Notre Dame, quietly minding my own beeswax at lunch today, munching on my omlette and hash browns.

the women in the booth in front of me were speaking Spanish...Spain Spanish...complete with lispy "s" sounds. the man and woman in the booth behind me? some sort of Slavic language. it wasn't German. coulda been Russian, Polish, something akin to the accent of that female Russian spy that used to hit on Colonel Hogan all the time.

who knew Perkins had become the "international house of baked goods?"

a moment of insanity

for some reason, between appointments today, i thought i'd head to the Notre Dame bookstore to purchase this year's student shirt. cool enough shirt:

anyway, i knew in the back of my mind that TOMORROW was the game against Michigan, one of our biggest rivalries. i guess i didn't think campus would be all that more busy than a normal day.

i was wrong.

holy crap! they had traffic cops moving cars in and out of the bookstore parking lot. there were charter busses lined up to let their passengers off to plunk down their hard-earned cash for anything and everything with a ND logo on it.

it really made me giggle. one, for MY silliness in thinking i could just get in and get out in a few minutes. and two, cuz this place really DOES hold magic for many thousands of people...and it's right in my backyard!!

GO IRISH!!

now THIS is Mexican food

dinner at El Camino Real (#3) tonight...while waiting for the realtor and the guy who wanted to look at our house to leave. this was magnificent. the beans were creamy and luscious, guacamole cool and silky, the verde sauce topping the chicken enchiladas was fragrant with green pepper goodness...

holy crap it was good. just the thing for my churning insides and to boost the non-existent energy after a bout of accidental gluten-ingesting...

gracias!

Monday, September 8, 2008

i guess i didn't really want...

a Tall Vanilla Latte from the Starbucks drive-thru. i didn't even pay attention, got to the station, popped off the top and found...

a Grande Mocha.

the funny thing is, i was tempted to order a Mocha, but then changed my mind.

guess i ultimately got what i wanted, no?

whew...

we eeked out a win. 21-13. Claussen looked good, the team started out slowly, but the defense played very well.

Michigan is next week...go IRISH!

here we go!

the first football Saturday of the 2008-09 season for the Fighting Irish. less than a half-hour to kickoff. sunshine, 72 degrees, gorgeous Saturday and i am camped out in front of the television.

i’m outfitted in my #9 Tommy Zibikowski jersey, got a cold beer (for the first time in THREE YEARS!) and am ready to see ND kick off a winning season! since our opponents are the Aztecs of San Diego State…better known as one of THE California State party schools, i am hopeful. GO IRISH!!!

this makes me crazy

this is one thing my mother does that bugs the living crap out of me.

this dishwater has been sitting in the kitchen sink for hours. she finished dishes two hours ago.

to be able to use the sink, one must dunk their hand into the cold water to drain the water, clean out the sink, and begin your work. its not like this dishwater is useable in its current state. you couldn't just add hot water to this to be able to use it.

my mother could be the star of the "Queen of Clean" tv show in every other aspect of the house. she has a routine she sticks to religiously with respect to household chores. she dusts on one specific day, vacuums on another, cleans the bathrooms on yet another.

yet, on a nearly daily basis, if you walk into our kitchen, this is what you'll find.

arrrrrgh...

80 hours of the 80's

all this weekend VH1 classic is crazy for the eighties. i just saw two videos from the band Talk Talk...wow...some of these videos were total crap! i recall seeing this Talking Heads like it was yesterday. Tim and i were parked in front of the tv in the famliy room in Woodland, and we laughed our butts off. David Byrne doing the spastic thing made us double over in giggles.

right now they are showing an Andy Taylor (Duran Duran!) video from the movie American Anthem starring that really cute Olympic gymnast...i think his name was Mitch...and Wayne Gretsky's wife, Janet Jones. we did the premiere of that movie when i was at FM102. i think i may still have an American Anthem red duffle bag filled with aircheck cassettes packed away somewhere! most of these "song from the movie" videos are really bad, but they are making me laugh as well as cringe :)

more later i am sure!
